Winter Wonderland

The 10th Annual Wonderland Light Display — December 1, 2026 – January 9, 2027, dusk to midnight, at 6th & Norwich in Milwaukee's Garden District. Free, walk-through, and powered entirely by volunteers.

Ten years ago this was a single tree lighting with borrowed lights. Today it's around 140 displays and tens of thousands of lights filling the community garden and farmers market — a walk-through light tunnel, a 25-foot Tree of Lights, a decorated gazebo, and artwork made by local high school students and neighbors.

The 2026 Season

  • Tuesday, December 1, 6:00 PM — Tree Lighting & Holiday Entertainment by Area Schools. The season opens the way it always has: carols, neighbors, and the switch flipped on year ten.
  • Wednesday, December 9 & Wednesday, December 16 — Singing Songs of the Season + Secret Santa Workshop. Sing-alongs and a little holiday making.
  • Nightly, December 1 – January 9 — the display is on from dusk to midnight. Bundle up and walk it as often as you like.
  • Saturday, January 9, 2027, 10:00 AM–noon — 5th Annual Christmas Tree Mulching. We close the season by turning neighborhood trees into mulch for local farms and gardens (dead light strings recycled, too).

Planning to help build it? The season starts at the Winter Wonderland Community Kickoff → — Wednesday, November 4, 6:30 PM at the Water Tower. Setup begins November 1 under setup lead Mike Albers; volunteers work weekend days from 10 AM until sundown, and there's a job for everyone — just show up.

How Wonderland Grew

Winter Wonderland was introduced and fostered by Alderman Terry Witkowski, who started by repurposing unwanted and donated Christmas lights to brighten the Garden District's tree lighting — he even bought post-Christmas lights at Stein's and donated many himself. The response was so strong that GDNA decided to decorate as much of the block as possible.

  • December 6, 2016 — the first annual tree lighting: Christmas music, cookies and hot chocolate, ornaments for kids to sign and hang, and a visit from Santa.
  • 2017 — carolers from Cooper Elementary, I.D.E.A.L. School, Howard Avenue Montessori, and Carmen High School join the tradition.
  • 2020 — the display goes big: a 140-foot open-air light tunnel, more than 40,000 lights, over 100 displays, and the 25-foot Tree of Lights donated by Gateway to Milwaukee — a cascade of patterns that takes over an hour to play through.
  • Today — Bryan Simon of Simon Landscaping donated the light tunnel and provides the electricity that keeps it glowing; Terry's own written setup instructions still guide the volunteers who build it each November; and a volunteer crew keeps the lights burning through rain, snow, and freeze until the last night.

Plan Your Visit

  • Where: Garden District Community Garden, 6th & Norwich, Milwaukee (gazebo: 3989 S. 6th St.)
  • When: December 1 – January 9, dusk to midnight, nightly
  • Cost: Free — a gift from the neighborhood
  • Good to know: It's a walk-through display in a garden — dress for the weather and watch for cords and stakes. The gazebo makes a fine photo stop.
